The Context of the Occupational Therapy Workshops -
"axis of work"
The Occupational Therapy Workshops together with
the Day Treatment and the Out-patient for Therapy and Rehabilitation of
Schizophrenia of the Psychiatric Clinic for Adults are one of the elements
of so called "rehabilitation labour world" (drawing 7). They enable to
create a varied therapeutic offer. From the proposal of the continuous
treatment (either as an out-patient or in day treatment) through a stable
participation in several-year program in the Workshops, to the occupation
in the job club and the possibility to undertake an interim in a professional
environment and "protected employment".
Creating of "places of protected work" is
linked to the practice to initiate within the community program of treatment
and rehabilitation of schizophrenia non-governmental organizations which
have as a goal the social and professional reintegrating of persons with
a history of psychic crises. The first of this type of organizations was
the Krakow Foundation "Hamlet". During almost ten years of its activities
the Foundation has become an independent institution leading in the city
many valuable and unique projects in the country.
In the project of "places of protected work" in the Coffee
Shop "Miodowa 9" the Foundation works together with the Psychiatric Clinic
for Adults which enables to employ single patients from the Day Treatment
and from The Occupational Therapy Workshops and to organize for them the
interim and professional training. Unfortunately the model solutions can
serve only few. This problem is defined as a "narrow throat" of.. the rehabilitation
structure through work.
This situation is the reason for preparing other projects
with collaboration with the Families Association the "Mental Health" as
well as with the Association for the Development of Care Community and
The new projects of places of protected
work in the "shop" or the "boarding-house" are to be organized together
with the municipal counsel of the city of Krakow.
For described here "labour world" the co-operation with
a free market Commercial Company "Big-Fox" has a special significance;
the company employs a group of patients who have completed a treatment
in the Day Treatment or rehabilitation in the Workshops. We have to stress
nevertheless that this kind of co-operation is very rare. After years of
experience from the job club where the therapists accompanied patients
in looking for a job in the labour market we can state with no doubt that
the most of the undertaken efforts of professional integration of those
suffering from schizophrenia is bound to be a failure or at least it is
